An operations manager told me he had sent a tailored application to a Riyadh company and waited seven weeks.

Then he noticed something. The same role was still open on LinkedIn, with the same description. It had been open when he applied, and it was open now.

He asked me if he had been rejected.

He had not. He had applied to a posting that was never an urgent vacancy in the first place.

Not Every Posting Is a Live Vacancy

A job posting can mean several different things, and from the outside they all look identical.

Sometimes there is an approved role and a manager who needs someone in the next 60 days. Sometimes a role is waiting for budget approval. Sometimes a company keeps a posting open to build a pool of candidates for future needs. Sometimes a role exists on paper, but an internal or referred candidate is already in conversation.

Each of these produces the same thing on your screen: a “Apply” button. Only the first one produces a fast reply.

Knowing the difference does not mean you stop applying. It means you decide how much effort each application deserves, and what else you do alongside it.

Six Signals to Check Before You Apply

None of these is proof on its own. Together, they give you a reasonable read.

1. The age and history of the posting.
LinkedIn shows when a role was posted. A role open for several weeks is not automatically dead, because Saudi hiring cycles are long. But a role that has been reposted repeatedly, or that sits open for months with no change, is a signal that it may be a pipeline posting rather than an urgent vacancy.

2. Whether the same role appears in more than one place.
Check the company’s own career page. If the role appears on the careers site, on LinkedIn, and through a recruiter, someone is actively trying to fill it. If it appears in only one place and looks inactive, treat it with more caution.

3. Who posted it.
A posting that comes from a named recruiter or a hiring manager tends to carry more intent than a generic company-page post. Look at who is attached to the role and whether that person is active on LinkedIn.

4. Language that points to a pool rather than a vacancy.
Phrases such as “talent community,” “future opportunities,” or “we are always looking for” describe a pipeline. They are not a promise of a role. Read the description for a specific team, a specific reporting line, and a specific problem to solve. Specificity usually means a real need.

5. Signs of growth around the company.
Contract wins, new project announcements, funding news, new branch openings, and leadership appointments often come before real hiring. A company that has just announced a large project is more likely to need people than one that has been quiet for a year. Check the company page and recent news before you apply.

6. Recruiter and team activity on LinkedIn.
If recruiters at the company are posting about openings, commenting on candidates’ profiles, or if members of the relevant team have recently joined, hiring is moving. If the recruiting team has gone quiet, or people on the relevant team have recently left, the role may be paused or in flux.

What To Do With What You Find

If most signals point to active hiring, apply promptly, then follow the three-path approach for reaching the hiring manager or someone inside the company.

If the signals are mixed, apply, but do not wait on that application. Treat it as one input and invest your time in conversations with people at the company.

If most signals point to a pipeline posting, a short application is enough. Put your real effort into building relationships with the team so you are known when a real role opens.

Why This Matters for Your Mindset

Silence from a pool posting is not a verdict on you. Many people in a long search quietly conclude they are not good enough, when the role was never going to move quickly. Checking these signals protects you from drawing the wrong conclusion from the wrong data.

3 Specific Actions This Week

1. Audit your five most recent applications against the six signals.
Mark each as active, mixed, or pipeline. You will likely find that some of your silence has an explanation unrelated to your CV.

2. Add a 10-minute check before every new application.
Look at the posting age, the company’s career page, who posted the role, and any recent company news.

3. For every pipeline-style company you want to work at, start one conversation with someone on the team.
You are building recognition before a real role appears.

The Line Worth Remembering

An open posting tells you a company wants candidates. It does not tell you the company needs one now. Learn to tell the difference, and silence stops feeling like a verdict.
